A finely carved French Louis XV style armchair by Kindel Furniture, with a serpentine caned back framed in molded walnut, outswept scrolled arms with padded manchettes, and a shaped seat rail over cabriole legs finished with carved acanthus knees and scrolled toes. The double-sided cane panel is set in a shaped molding that follows the curve of the crest rail, and the carving continues fully around the back — this was built to be seen from every angle, not pushed against a wall. Originally an armchair from a dining suite, it works beautifully on its own as a desk chair, vanity seat, or occasional chair in a bedroom or entry.
This chair retains its original label, stamped February 7, 1977.
Kindel Furniture Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan was one of the last great American bench-made furniture houses, known for licensed museum reproduction programs for Winterthur and the Henry Ford Museum. Every piece left the factory with a paper label recording model, finish, cover, and inspection date, which makes Kindel unusually well-documented among 20th century American makers.
