A monumental Parsons-style executive desk in burlwood and walnut with oak inlay, made by Hiebert of Torrance c. 1970s. The broad, heavy desktop is set against unusually slender legs, constructed from solid steel to provide the necessary support while maintaining a light profile. At 80 inches wide and 38 inches deep, it offers ample workspace for multiple people and can also serve as a partners desk.
The top is finished in highly figured olive ash burl, separated from the walnut border by a narrow oak inlay. Walnut continues around the apron and across the drawer fronts, while the interiors are finished in white oak. The combination of rich veneers, restrained geometry, and thin metal structure evokes both Florence Knoll’s architectural office furniture and Roger Sprunger’s work for Dunbar.
Based in Southern California, between 1965 and the mid 1980s Hiebert grew into one of the largest American manufacturers of executive and contract furniture. This desk is an unusually elaborate example of the company’s work, pairing commercial-grade construction with materials more commonly associated with high-end residential furniture.
The desk has been fully refinished and presents beautifully.
