A compelling signed figurative bronze titled Sumo Wrestler by Western Pennsylvania artist Janice Barone (1940-2026), circa 2011.
Barone renders the seated athlete with exceptional anatomical observation and emotional intensity. The asymmetrical pose—with one arm extending beyond the base—creates an unusual sense of suspended movement, while the warm, variegated bronze patina highlights the figure’s musculature and modeled surface.
The sculpture is incised “BARONE” along the front edge and mounted on a substantial wood platform.
This exact work is documented in the Southwestern Pennsylvania Council for the Arts’ archived 2011 Annual artist roster. The archive identifies Janice Barone of North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania; the title Sumo Wrestler; the medium as bronze; and dimensions of 10.5 by 8.75 by 9.5 inches.
The council’s annual regional exhibitions were juried. As the surviving 2011 archive is an artist roster rather than a complete catalog, no award or edition information is attributed to the sculpture. Barone is additionally documented in the council’s 2007 Annual Juried Regional Exhibition catalog with another figurative bronze, Polynesian Dancer (My Trip to Hawaii), then offered at $1,000.
No edition number or foundry mark was located.
Overall dimensions: approximately 10.5 inches wide by 8.5 inches deep by 10 inches high. Wood platform measures 8.5 by 7 inches. Weight is 13 pounds 14 ounces.
Very good condition, with attractive natural variation to the bronze patina. No observed cracks, breaks, losses or repairs. Minor surface wear and light marks are present on the wood platform, consistent with age and display.
