The dramatic body is composed of a broad curved outer frame filled with individually arranged radiating lucite ribs, creating an architectural silhouette reminiscent of an open fan or stylized shell. The varying thicknesses and polished edges of the transparent acrylic capture and refract light beautifully, giving the lamp an almost crystalline presence that changes between daylight and illumination.

The substantial oval lucite base retains the engraved Van Teal signature, confirming its designer attribution. A clear cylindrical lucite finial continues the transparent composition through the top of the lamp.

Completed with an impressive 22-inch diameter shade marked Lamp Shade Co., New Brunswick, the lamp has particularly elegant proportions. The expansive shade balances the broad fan-shaped body and produces a warm, atmospheric glow while allowing the illuminated lucite structure to remain the focal point.

Van Teal became particularly associated with expressive lighting incorporating lucite, acrylic and other unconventional materials during the latter 20th century. This example is especially compelling for its restrained all-clear palette and unusually graphic radiating construction, a design that functions as sculpture even when unlit.

Condition

Very good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use. The lucite retains excellent clarity and presents beautifully. The shade exhibits approximately three localized areas of age-related wear. The shade remains structurally sound and presents well overall. Please refer to photographs for condition. See less
