Vintage hand-painted sheet-metal panel depicting Susanna, based on the 1869 marble sculpture by Italian artist Giovanni Battista Lombardi. The anonymous painter translated the sculpture into a monochromatic image in ivory, gray and black, isolating the seated figure against a deep black ground. Visible brushwork and the worn metal surface give the image a markedly different character from the original marble.
Painted directly on thin metal with small holes near the upper corners for hanging. No signature is visible. This is a later interpretation of Lombardi’s sculpture, not a work by Lombardi.
