From Paul-Louis de Giafferri’s "The History of French Masculine Costume", a large-format fashion history collection published 1927, these hand-colored plate selections capture the evolution of men's formal attire interpreted through a 1920s graphic-design sensibility. The faces are almost caricatured, the poses are slightly theatrical and the colors are deliberately simplified, yet rich.
The coloring technique is pochoir. The illustration was printed and then colored by hand through individual stencils, allowing the colorist to add surprisingly subtle variations. Pochoir work is prized for its crisp, jewel-like hues and beautiful flat areas of pigment.
