This antique coffer from China's Shanxi province has a simple, clean-lined form and a striking finish of dark lacquer. The 19th-century cabinet is ideal today as a sideboard or credenza, crafted of northern elm (yumu) with three drawers, six doors and a narrow, rectangular tabletop.
Originally, only the centermost doors opened to the interior, but our carpenters skilled in traditional joinery have modified the outer panels into front-facing doors. The cabinet's minimal design is easy and timeless, softened by a rich patina and light wear along the corners.
