This documented Halabala design appears in period furniture catalogues and represents an outstanding example of the designer's highly recognizable approach to bentwood seating. The chairs are defined by their elegant, sculptural armrests, formed from beautifully curved wood that sweeps around the upholstered body in a continuous flowing line. The combination of these expressive bentwood elements, gently reclined backrests and low, generously proportioned seats creates a particularly strong architectural silhouette. Halabala was one of the leading figures of 20th-century Czechoslovak furniture design. His innovative use of bentwood, together with an emphasis on comfort, functionality and sculptural form, resulted in some of the most recognizable Central European seating designs of the Art Deco and early Modernist period.
