the stool model 728 s belongs to the famous furniture series that is now closely associated with the furnishings of the fledermaus cabaret in vienna, which opened in 1907. Made of bentwood, the series was produced by the viennese firm jacob & josef kohn and appeared in their sales catalogs as early as 1906. The design likely originated around 1905.

traditionally, the series is attributed to josef hoffmann, who was responsible for the interior design of the fledermaus cabaret. However, it is unlikely that the furniture was designed exclusively for the cabaret: as early as 1906, a year before its opening, the model was presented at the international exhibition in milan. Otto schönthal also used chairs from this series in 1908 for the café at the vienna art show.

the exact authorship of the design is also not definitively established. In addition to josef hoffmann, gustav siegel, in particular, played a significant role. Siegel, a student of hoffmann and long-time head of the design department at jacob & josef kohn, is said to have claimed authorship of the series to the architect karl mang himself. It therefore seems plausible that the series originated within the circle of josef hoffmann and the design department of jacob & josef kohn, headed by gustav siegel.
