Displayed together, the two panels create an expansive river-village landscape in which mist-covered mountains, walled residences, rocky banks and blue waterways flow naturally across the central divide. Covered sampan-style boats carry figures along the river, while villagers appear throughout the architectural and garden scenes. A gateway inscription appears to read “Chen Residence,” adding another intimate narrative detail to the composition.

The landscape is entirely hand-painted through thousands of individually applied marks, expressive black outlines, fine stippling, dry-brushing and translucent layers of blue, green, ochre, brown and gray. Deliberate rubbing, softened coloration and subtle surface distressing create the character of an aged Chinese mural while revealing the extensive handwork throughout.

The painted decoration continues around the finished edges, allowing the panels to be displayed without additional framing. Each substantial solid-wood panel has a black-finished reverse fitted with a brass-tone keyhole hanging plate. The pair may be installed closely together as one continuous landscape or separated as coordinating works.

No identical market examples were located during our research. The pair was likely produced in limited quantities through a specialist Asian decorative workshop or decorator-import house. The maker and precise country of manufacture are unknown; no attribution to a particular manufacturer is being made. See less
