The work is particularly striking for its expressive handling of paint, visible texture and sophisticated palette combining muted greens, lilac-grey tones, pinks and cool shadows.

The sitter’s face is carefully modelled, while the clothing and surrounding areas are treated more freely, giving the painting a distinctly modernist character and a surprisingly contemporary presence.

A small monogram is visible at the lower right, although the artist has not been firmly identified.

The painting has recently been carefully cleaned and protected with a reversible varnish, which has restored depth and clarity to the colours while preserving the original character of the surface.

Presented in a period frame with an attractive aged finish.
