1920s advertising sign produced for Sanford Manufacturing Co. of Chicago and New York, a prominent manufacturer of inks, mucilages, gums, pastes, and related office and writing supplies. The sign features reverse-painted glass with bold lettering reading "Sanford's Inks and Mucilages" against a deep black ground.
The flowing Sanford's script is executed with gold-tone foil, while the lower block lettering incorporates silver-tone foil. The glass associated with the lower lettering appears to have been beveled or cut to create additional depth and a dimensional appearance. The contrasting metallic lettering against the black glass gives the advertising panel a particularly striking presentation.
Presented in a substantial wood frame with gold-tone inner trim. An attractive surviving example of early 20th-century commercial advertising combining reverse-painted glass, metallic foil decoration, and period typography.
