This remarkable antique is the most exceptional American Federal banquet table which we have been able to present in quite some time. The cabinet-maker who labored to create this incredible table was able to secure some of the most valuable exotic mahogany lumber that could be found anywhere in the world. Sourced from the rainforests of Central America, at the height of the triangular maritime trade routes between England, America, and the Caribbean Islands, this selection of mahogany was once regarded as the finest in the world. The impressive width of the old growth mahogany timber planks speak to the colossal nature of the majestic ancient trees brought back to America for the wealthy patrons who demanded the best furniture of the time.

This antique banquet table features twin pedestal supports that have expertly turned columns along with four molded down-swept legs that each terminate with brass lion paw foot covers on caster wheels. The ends of the table are able to tilt upward when the long runner supports are removed and the leaves are taken out. A pair of antique brass latches lock the table top downward and with the knobs slid back release the top so that it may swivel upward. The entire table is in marvelous condition due in part to the molded edge spanning the whole perimeter that has limited moisture from both entering and escaping the ends of the wide growth lumber ensuring that no warping or splitting could occur. After two centuries this table remains as beautiful and dependable as ever before.

The table consists of two table leaves that are nearly two feet wide which expand the table to almost 8 feet long. With just one leaf installed the table rests close to six feet long overall. Each leaf is secured with brass horseshoe pins and supported by a pair of wooden runners than span the underside of the table sliding through a fixed metal slot. This creates an incredibly sturdy table that can quickly be reduced in length. Should a smaller dining table be required the two pedestal based dining ends will fit together to form a brand new table that measures roughly four feet long by four feet wide. One table leaf had been set aside for a considerable amount of time resulting it the overall table being exposed to sunlight and mellowing from a darker red/brown mahogany to a lighter tone. We elected to not change the table so that the next owner has the option of leaving the entire table alone, attempting to bring back the more vibrant color, or just have the darker table leaf matched to the existing components. One of the twin locks is absent from the backside of a table which is of no consequence as only one latch is really needed to secure the top to its pedestal.

This table measures 94" long with both leaves installed, 71" long when using just one leaf, and 47 1/2" long when just the pedestal ends are locked together. The table measures 48" wide and stands 28 3/4" tall. See less
