On the Design:

Reimagining imperial East Asian iconography through an expressive contemporary lens, this piece draws inspiration from traditional Chinese dragon robes (jifu) and court textile art. The central field is organized around a dramatic, mirror-image pair of celestial dragons facing inward across a central sacred pearl motif. Floating amidst the dragons are stylized auspicious cloud motifs (xiangyun), flaming pearls, and symbolic bat-like forms that echo historic Qing-dynasty court weaving. Framing the base of the layout is a disciplined multi-tiered spandrel featuring repeating diagonal standing water lines and crashing wave crests (lishui), establishing an architectural anchor that balances the dynamic movement across the upper field. Every motif is rendered with precise structural outlines, bridging classic imperial symbolism with contemporary graphic clarity.

The colorway pairs a warm, honey-hued peach foundation with deep slate-blue, cream, taupe, and rich terracotta-red accents. Gentle abrash variations within the hand-spun wool yield organic tonal shifts across the peach field, providing a luminous backdrop that prevents the field from appearing flat. The cool slate-blue and cream tones of the dragon scales and wave crests create a clear visual contrast against the warm ground, defining every claw, whisker, and cloud swirl with exceptional clarity.
