The dial reads Gent of Leicester rather than Gents of Leicester, a real, documented naming variation found on genuine vintage examples from the same maker.

Clocks like this one were not originally built to be looked at alone; they were built to agree with each other. As a slave clock it had no internal timekeeping, relying on a wired connection to a central master clock that sent out a pulse at set intervals to move the hands forward. Gents of Leicester, founded in 1872 by John Thomas Gent, made this kind of large-scale synchronized timekeeping possible across Britain. This example has been finished in black and given a modern quartz heart, so it now keeps its own time on a single battery.
