this sophisticated american-made piece is an excellent example of the functional yet highly decorative campaign furniture produced by drexel heritage during the 1970s. Its compact proportions conceal an unusually versatile entertaining function: the two outer sections of the top slide smoothly outward, expanding the overall width and revealing a contrasting black laminate serving surface in the centre.

when closed, the cabinet measures approximately 101 cm wide × 49 cm deep × 85 cm high. With both sections fully extended, the serving surface becomes substantially larger; an identical drexel example has been documented at approximately 64 inches / 163 cm wide when fully opened.

the expandable top is particularly clever in use. With the cabinet positioned against a wall, the top can remain closed as an elegant sideboard. When entertaining, the two sections can be pulled outward to create a generous serving and preparation area. The central black surface is particularly suited to mixing drinks, arranging glassware, serving hors d’oeuvres or preparing cocktails, while the surrounding wood remains protected from spills and wear. This explains why the piece is often described as a dry bar, bar server, buffet or serving sideboard rather than simply a conventional cabinet.

the cabinet is exceptionally handsome in its detailing. The warm golden-brown wood is covered in highly figured veneer with dramatic, almost sculptural grain patterns. Fine dark stringing/inlaid linework frames the drawer and door panels, creating a beautiful graphic contrast against the richly coloured wood. The top is similarly framed with delicate dark inlay, while the substantial moulded edges and stepped architectural detailing give the piece a wonderfully sophisticated presence.

the front consists of two spacious drawers above three paneled cabinet doors, all decorated with the same carefully selected figured veneer. The drawers are fitted with elegant original oval brass pulls, while the lower doors feature striking elongated brass escutcheon-style hardware. The combination of highly figured timber, dark linear inlay and polished brass is characteristic of the refined campaign aesthetic of the period.

inside, the cabinet offers generous storage for barware, bottles, glassware, serving pieces, linens and entertaining accessories. The central interior shelf has an unusually shaped front edge, adding another subtle design detail that is rarely found on ordinary sideboards.

the cabinet is also finished at the back, allowing it to stand away from the wall if desired. Contemporary examples of this drexel design were equipped with concealed rolling casters, making the piece practical to reposition when the extended serving surface is required.
