Rendered in a restrained grisaille palette, the central composition depicts a dramatic classical chariot procession, probably representing Apollo and his horses, surrounded by attendant figures within a wooded landscape. The remarkable trompe-l'œil composition gives the impression of an architectural fresco or decorative panel, the vivid red drapery providing a striking contrast to the softly modelled stonework and muted classical scene beyond. An unusually large and highly decorative work, beautifully suited to an important interior and retaining considerable presence at over two metres wide.
