About the Artist

Alexis Leyva Machado, known internationally as Kcho (b. 1970), is a prominent contemporary artist. He graduated from Havana’s National School of Fine Arts and gained international recognition after receiving the Grand Prize at the 1995 Gwangju Biennale. His work has subsequently been exhibited internationally and is represented in major institutional collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Growing up surrounded by the sea profoundly influenced his imagery, and the vessel became a recurring symbol through which he explores themes of migration, displacement, memory, isolation.

This striking original charcoal on canvas presents one of Kcho’s quintessential subjects: a dramatically rendered boat rising vertically through an atmospheric landscape. The boat dominates the composition while smaller vessels, architectural elements and figures emerge from the surrounding landscape. Kcho repeatedly employed boats and improvised vessels as powerful visual symbols, making this work immediately recognizable within the artist’s established vocabulary.
