The composition with several kittens captured in a calm and playful position has an exceptionally delicate and intimate effect, with an emphasis on the detail of the fur, the expression of the eyes and the soft light. The colouring is warm, harmonious, with a typical contrast of light fur and a darker background. The painting is executed with high technical certainty and bears clear stylistic features of Dutch-Belgian painting of the second half of the 19th century. The overall concept, work with light and the subject matter strongly evoke the work of Henriëtte Ronner-Knip, or rather her followers and contemporary epigones, who specialized in genre motifs with cats. The painting is set in a very high-quality, richly decorated and gilded frame with a rich plant decor, which harmonizes perfectly with the work and significantly increases its decorative and collector's value. The frame bears signs of age corresponding to its age, without disturbing interventions, with a beautiful patina. The painting is oil on panel, which is typical for this period and genre. The condition is good, with common period craquelure and traces of age, without major damage. The back is original, without signs of modern interventions. A very attractive interior painting, suitable both for collectors of 19th century genre painting and as a representative decorative element for historical and classical interiors.
