The authorship is evidenced by the signature Cram in the lower right corner. The painting artistically follows the romanticizing orientalist tradition of the 19th century, known for example from the works of Eugène Delacroix or ardent followers of genre painting with war themes. The painter paid special attention to the drama of the scene, the diagonal composition and the detailed treatment of the figure, horse and vegetation. The expressive color, pasty brush strokes and contrasting light enhance the energy of the scene. The oil on panel is adjusted in a richly decorated gilded frame.
