Beautiful vintage Japanese papier-mâché serving tray dating to approximately the 1940s–1950s. The tray features an ornate multicolor floral design in rich red, cream, and gold tones with an elegant Old World influence.
The decorative surface appears to combine printed or transfer decoration with possible hand-finished details and is protected by a lacquered, alcohol-resistant finish.
The underside retains its original Japanese marking reading “Alcohol Proof / Made in Japan / Patent No. 67776.” The patent number is somewhat difficult to read and may possibly be 67976.
A wonderful decorative piece for a collected interior, this tray would be beautiful displayed on a coffee table, bar, ottoman, or console, or incorporated into a French, traditional, maximalist, or European-inspired room.
