An exceptional three-piece suite of architectural wall art produced exclusively for Ballard Designs, featuring one monumental Cafaggiolo lunette accompanied by a matched pair of Marignolle lunettes.
The imagery is based on the celebrated Medici villa views painted by Flemish-born artist Giusto Utens at the turn of the 17th century. Commissioned for the Medici court, Utens’ distinctive bird’s-eye compositions documented the dynasty’s Tuscan villas, formal gardens, orchards, fountains, agricultural grounds and surrounding landscapes with extraordinary architectural detail.
The oversized central Cafaggiolo composition depicts the fortified Medici estate with its crenellated walls, towers, formal gardens and expansive Tuscan landscape. The two coordinating Marignolle panels present a quieter but equally compelling Renaissance estate view, organized around a long central axis with formal plantings, orchards, cypress trees and the villa rising above the grounds.
Large Cafaggiolo / BAL9001: 51.5" W × 30.25" H × 0.75" D Chairish
Each smaller Marignolle / BAL9990: 35.75" W × 22.5" H × 1" D
Presented together, the three pieces create an unusually sophisticated architectural installation: one dramatic estate view anchored by a symmetrical pair of garden lunettes.
The palette is beautifully restrained and atmospheric, with aged olive, celadon, parchment, muted terracotta, charcoal and antique-gold tones. The arched demi-lune silhouettes and classically ornamented borders give the group the presence of collected European architectural fragments rather than conventional wall art.
Each piece retains its original “Made exclusively for Ballard Designs” label.
Identifying marks:
Large Cafaggiolo lunette: Ballard Designs BAL9001
Matched Marignolle pair: Ballard Designs BAL9990
Style: Italian Renaissance Revival, Grand Tour, European Country House, Italian Regency, Old World
Form: Architectural demi-lune / lunette wall plaques
Maker: Ballard Designs
Subject: Medici villas of Cafaggiolo and Marignolle, Tuscany
After: Giusto Utens, late 16th / early 17th century
Set: Three coordinating pieces, one large central lunette and two matching smaller lunettes
The strength of this group lies not only in the individual imagery, but in the rarity and versatility of the complete three-piece arrangement. The matched Marignolle pair can flank the larger Cafaggiolo, be installed symmetrically on adjoining walls, or create continuity across a library, dining room, staircase, entry, salon or long console wall.
A particularly compelling set for interiors drawing from European country house, collected traditional, Renaissance Revival, dark academia, Italianate, maximalist, Old World or Grand Tour influences.
Wonderful for an interior designer or collector seeking large-scale architectural artwork with genuine historical source imagery and an established decorative provenance.
Condition: Very good vintage/pre-owned condition with age-appropriate surface and edge wear consistent with display. Please review photographs closely for condition and individual surface details. Original Ballard labels remain on the backs.
Sold as a complete three-piece set.
