A rare pair of large-scale Chinese export watercolor and gouache panels on paper, each in a simple giltwood frame. Works of this type—produced in Canton (Guangzhou) and related treaty-port workshops for the Western market—are far more commonly encountered in much smaller formats because of the delicate support. Examples of this size retaining fresh color are uncommon.
Each panel depicts figures in traditional dress engaged in processions, gatherings, and daily pursuits amid pavilions, tiled-roof houses, gardens, water, rocks, and trees. The left panel centers on a pavilion with a circular opening and a group carrying banners or standards along a path. The right panel shows courtyard and waterside buildings with figures under parasols and a mounted or processional group. The compositions follow the classic export vocabulary of Chinese house and landscape scenes made for the very rich European and American interiors.
The panels are framed as a matched pair and ready to hang. Typical of late Qing / early Republican export production, they were executed by anonymous Master workshop artists for the export trade rather than the domestic market.
