Antique Royal Staffordshire Pottery Toby jug designed by Francis Carruthers Gould and manufactured by Arthur J. Wilkinson. Dating to 1918, the hand-painted jug depicts Louis Botha, a South African politician and Second Boer War veteran who became the first prime minister of the Union of South Africa.
A Toby jug, sometimes called a Fillpot or Philpot, is a figural pottery vessel modeled as a seated person or recognizable individual. The figure’s hat or head typically forms the pouring spout, with a handle positioned at the back.
