Pair of patinated bronze sculptures of Bacchus with grapes - late 19th century. Pair of decorative sculptures in patinated bronze, representing the young Bacchus or Dionysus, the classical god of wine and the harvest. The figures are crowned with vine leaves and fruits, holding a bunch of grapes with their arms raised. The panther skin – a traditional attribute of Bacchus – crosses the body and is held in the other hand. Each figure rests on a tree trunk, on a framed circular base. The two sculptures reproduce the same model, showing small differences resulting from the casting and manual finishing. The composition is inspired by Greco-Roman sculpture and integrates the neoclassical taste that was very popular in France and other European countries during the second half of the 19th century. Object: pair of sculptures. Representation: Bacchus/Dionysus with a bunch of grapes and panther skin.
Probable origin: Continental Europe, probably France. Period: late 19th century, circa 1880–1900. Style: Neoclassical / Greco-Roman Revival. Material: Cast bronze, chiseled and patinated. Author: Unidentified. Signature or mark: Not observed. Number of pieces: 2. Dimensions of each sculpture: 29 × 11 × 11 cm. Good overall condition, with signs of use consistent with its age.
