In this large abstract painting in mixed media on canvas by French-American artist Christiane Corcelle, a soft, weathered field of cream and powder blue holds a few bold blocks of colour: a deep red square floating near the top, a black rectangle tucked beneath it, and a warm red band anchoring the bottom edge. Over it all, a loose graphite line sketches the outline of a bottle or vessel, as though the shape is just beyond reach and still taking form. Scratches, scraped layers and small patches of ochre and pink reward a slower look.
Quiet but confident, Out Of Reach would be at home above a console, a bed, or in an entry where its tall vertical format can breathe. The pale ground keeps it calm, while the red accents tie in easily with warm woods, leather, or neutral linen. This piece will be carefully packed for safe shipping.
Medium: Mixed media on canvas, 2024. Dimensions (height x width x depth): 48 × 36 × 1 1/2 in.
Like much of Corcelle's work, the surface is built up in layers of paint, collaged paper, graphite and scratched lines, so the painting reads one way from across the room and another up close. Expect small discoveries of texture, handwriting and color the longer you look, which makes it a work that keeps rewarding everyday viewing.
Christiane Corcelle is a French-American mixed media artist based in Massachusetts. Her intuitive, layered practice spans painting, printmaking, collage, and de-collage, building richly textured surfaces that invite close exploration. Guided by curiosity and openness to process, she transforms color, shape, and found materials into works that are both dynamic and contemplative.
Drawing inspiration from global experiences and cultural textures, Corcelle has exhibited widely across the United States and internationally, including shows in France, Vietnam, China, Cuba, Peru, and Azerbaijan. Her work is represented in public and private collections worldwide, among them the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), the Boston Public Library, the Art Complex Museum, the Contemporary Art Center, the Vietnam Fine Arts Association in Hanoi, the Danang Fine Arts Museum, the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, Universidade Feevale in Brazil, Las Casas de las Américas in Cuba, and the Permanent Collection of Château d’Orquevaux in Orquevaux, France.
She also designed 60 Years of North American Prints, the Boston Printmakers’ award-winning publication.
