An impressive French bronze figural group after Claude Michel, known as Clodion (1738–1814), depicting a lively Bacchanalian scene with a satyr, a classical female figure, and a putto.
Richly modeled in the Rococo tradition, the composition captures the movement, theatricality, and expressive naturalism associated with Clodion's celebrated mythological sculpture. The figures are rendered with finely articulated details and a warm, aged bronze patina.
The bronze bears the signature “CLODION” and the date 1857, together with additional hand-incised marks near the lower edge, including a small mark beneath the date and cross-hatching at the front. These markings have not been attributed to a specific foundry.
The sculpture rests upon a substantial circular green marble plinth with an applied brass identification plaque reading “Satyr And Girl / Claude Michel Clodion.” The contrast between the richly patinated bronze and polished green marble creates a commanding presentation.
At approximately 20 inches high, this substantial sculptural group is particularly well suited to a library, mantel, entry console, or traditional interior incorporating classical decorative arts.
