Finding an unbroken, single-owner archive of this grand scale with matching provenance markers is an absolute anomaly in today's vintage market.
Spanning a rich cross-section of late 20th-century design movements, this group includes high-energy action splatters, fluid paint-marbling arrays, deep dimensional ribbon loops, and intricate, fragmented "crackle" finishes. A unified visual thread ties the works together via recurring pops of mid-century primary yellow, vibrant turquoise, stark black vector line work, and deep, grounding earth tones.
Condition & Framing Updates
11pieces in this collection is structurally vetted, historically intact, and in excellent vintage condition. Authentic period markers include hand-stretched canvas wraps over natural light pine stretcher bars, industrial-gauge backing staples, and original signature or stretcher inscriptions. Ten of the pieces retain pristine, untouched original "Lee Studio" rear paper labels featuring the company's iconic 1970s red geometric logo and handwritten titles. One piece ("Dogwood") features the original title and inventory numbers written by hand directly onto the vintage wooden stretcher bars alongside a scenic front signature.
Framing Note: This collection features a curated combination of beautifully preserved original 1970s frames alongside select updated frames that were cleanly swapped to replace aging vintage framing elements. The Connection to be Furniture Stores.
• The Vanguard Business Model: Founded in the 1960s, Lee Reynolds' Vanguard Studios did not sell through traditional fine art galleries. Instead, they employed a stable of commercial artists to mass-produce hand-painted abstract and modernist art designed specifically to be distributed through furniture stores and interior designers.
• Kunzelmann Esser's Role: As a massive, premier showroom (known as the "House of Quality Furniture" with eight massive floors on Milwaukee's Historic Mitchell Street), Kunzelmann Esser relied heavily on vignettes to stage their furniture. Carrying Vanguard Studios / "Van Gaard" pieces allowed them to sell coordinated, affordable modern art right off the showroom floor to regular consumers looking to complete their 1960s and 1970s mid-century modern living spaces.

Commercial decorators and furniture showrooms like Kunzelmann Esser purchased these paintings in bulk batches because they were titled, cataloged, and pre-framed to match specific mid-century interior design palettes:

The Artistic Techniques Used:
Lee Studio specialized in two major mid-century decorative trends meant to mimic high-end fine art:
1. The Pollock-Style Drip/Splatter (Action Painting): Pieces like Stampede, Hard Rain, and the yellow/turquoise painting feature heavy, layered enamel splatters. These were designed to give homeowners the look of a Jackson Pollock abstract expressionist piece at a fraction of the cost.
2. Liquid Marbling and Paint Manipulation: Pieces like Candy Corn (the orange/yellow/black pattern), Pebbles, and the purple/white ring painting utilize a fluid marbling technique. The studio's artists floated acrylics or enamels and used combs, sticks, or chemical thinning agents to pull the paint into geometric ripples, webs, and cell structures.. See less
