In this abstract encaustic painting on wood panel by Bay Area artist Rinat Goren, tall, rounded orange forms stand in a row against a pale lemon ground, with a column of orange discs at the right and small dashed ticks marking the edges like measurements. The big shapes are dense and painterly, with darker burnt orange and red layers worked into them, while the yellow behind is thin and scraped. White contour lines give each form a quiet outline. Small circles in red and orange punctuate the lower left and the pale gaps between the forms. The shapes are alike but never identical, which suits Goren's interest in individuals sharing a space. The palette is juicy and warm, with citrus brightness throughout.
The citrus palette lifts a kitchen, a dining room or a sunny living room. It looks good with round wooden tables, cream sofas, olive or sage accents and warm white walls. The upright format fits beside a doorway or above a sideboard, and the strong orange gives a quiet room an instant focal point. A brass lamp or a bowl of fruit nearby completes it.
Encaustic (beeswax and pigment) on wood board, 24 x 30 x 1.5 in (61 x 76.2 x 3.8 cm). Unframed.
Rinat Goren works in encaustic, an ancient technique in which beeswax is melted, mixed with pigment, applied in layers and fused with heat. She began as a collage artist and still builds her surfaces with paper and drawn marks between the layers, so the wax becomes translucent and textured, with depth that glows from within. The work is made on a wood board and left unframed.
Rinat Goren was born and raised in Israel and now lives and works in Woodside, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. She studied physical therapy and interior design, and she committed to art as her full-time work after moving to California and raising a family. She began in collage, then worked in acrylic and mixed media on canvas, and has painted full time in encaustic since 2008.
Her layered paintings of figures, circles, grids and lines are inspired by the human capacity to think, decide and act with intention. Her solo exhibition Under the Surface was presented at the Peninsula Museum of Art in San Bruno in 2017, and her work is held in private collections across the United States, particularly in California.
