A vibrant and exceptionally colorful mixed-media work by celebrated American Pop artist Peter Max (1937–2025), featuring one of the artist’s most recognizable subjects: the Statue of Liberty. Titled "God Bless America – With Five Liberties", the composition combines Max’s exuberant palette, bold graphic imagery, and energetic hand-painted passages in a quintessentially American image.
This is one of two Peter Max paintings we have from the Liberty series, the larger of the two. These paintings combine hand-painted acrylic with lithography to fascinating effect.
Hand-painted elements are visible across the surface. Thick, gestural applications of pigment in blue, red, yellow, white, pink, and green create areas of pronounced texture and distinguish the work from a conventional graphic print. In close inspection, individual brushstrokes and raised passages of paint are clearly evident, bringing an immediate, painterly quality to Max’s familiar Pop vocabulary.
Peter Max became one of the defining visual artists of the American counterculture and Pop era, developing an unmistakable style characterized by psychedelic color, cosmic imagery, popular culture, and an optimistic visual language. Over the course of his career, the Statue of Liberty became one of his signature subjects. His fascination with Liberty was particularly appropriate to an artist whose work so frequently celebrated freedom, imagination, and American popular culture.
A striking example of Peter Max’s mature work, God Bless America – With Five Liberties combines several of the artist’s most desirable characteristics: the Statue of Liberty, American flag imagery, brilliant color, graphic repetition, and expressive hand-applied paint.
