This studio art pottery set was hand-crafted by Brooklyn artist Janine Sopp. Designed for the Jewish New Year celebration (Rosh Hashanah), the set features a large round serving tray, a matching ceramic honey bowl, and a wooden honey dipper.
The central recessed ring of the platter displays hand-embossed Hebrew script reading "שנה טובה" (Shanah Tovah / "Good Year") framed by intricate geometric diamond borders and an outer mosaic brick rim. The surface showcases Sopp's characteristic textile-inspired textures and watercolor-like glaze washes in deep lavender, dusty purple, and Mediterranean turquoise-green. The underside bears the hand-incised signature "Jasmine Sopp".
Historical Provenance & Design Significance: Originating from Janine Sopp’s Greenpoint, Brooklyn studio, this piece bridges fine textile design and functional ritual art. Drawing on ancient Middle Eastern tilework, architectural relief, and Mediterranean color palettes, Sopp transforms traditional Judaica ritual objects into sculptural stoneware forms.
Curator’s Note: This hand-crafted ceramic Shana Tova set brings rich tactile depth and artisanal elegance to festive holiday tablescapes. Featuring hand-embossed Hebrew typography and layered glazes in deep purple and turquoise, this set serves as both a functional honey presentation dish and a decorative wall or tabletop display piece when not in seasonal use.
