Warm copper and caramel-brown letters read IT ALL JUST MEANS SO MUCH across a field of pearly white beads, set in two lines. The metallic warmth of the brown beads gives the words a glow, like polished wood, against the pale ground. The letters are stacked in a chunky, grid-like alphabet and the rows undulate softly. The phrase is blurted, heartfelt and a little overwhelmed, and the beadwork makes it feel carried and kept. Panda Landa, who often works with second-hand cloth and hand-dyeing, here uses a different material with the same unfussy intimacy. It floats against natural linen in a white box frame.
The copper tone warms a white wall and picks up leather, tan, walnut and brass. Hang this wide, shallow piece above a desk, a bookshelf, a console or a bed, or place it in a kitchen or a hallway where a hand-made message adds warmth. It works well on a gallery wall with other small frames, or on its own in a spare, tidy space.
Beads, 15 x 7 x 1.75 in (38.1 x 17.8 x 4.4 cm). Framed in white, mounted against natural linen.
These panels are made of tiny beads built up in tight horizontal rows, with each letter formed by changing the bead color from row to row. The finished rectangle is slightly irregular at its edges, a soft, handmade shape rather than a rigid one, and it is mounted against natural linen inside a white box frame. The wording is short and personal, set in blocky, grid-like lettering that echoes pixels, stitches and early screen type.
Panda Landa (b. 1982) is a queer, non-binary visual artist and filmmaker raised in the Nevada desert and now based in Joshua Tree, California. Self-taught, they work through instinct and improvisation, making mixed-media textile pieces from second-hand fabrics that are dyed by hand, stitched and stretched over frames. Sustainability is central to the practice, and every cloth arrives with its own history.
Their ongoing series, including PORTAL, ALTAR, ECLIPSE, VESSEL and RITUAL, touch on queerness, identity, ancestral narrative, healing and transformation, and more recent beaded panels carry short, tender phrases in color. Landa made the 2022 film In the Middle of Everywhere and has offered a workshop on giving new life to clothes at the Joshua Tree Music Festival.
