In this beaded text wall art by Joshua Tree artist Panda Landa, letters in jade and sea-green capitals read WHATEVER FOREVER on a pearly white field of beads, the first line a lighter, minty green and the second a deeper green, so the phrase seems to take a breath between its two words. The ground fades toward translucent at the top. The tone is casual and a little cavalier, an offhand vow, and the bead rows, slightly wavy, hold it with care. Panda Landa makes much of the work from second-hand cloth that is hand-dyed, and here the shifting greens give the piece a similar sense of color that came from the process. The panel is mounted against linen in a white box frame.
A fresh little square for a kitchen, a bathroom, a bedroom or a sunroom. The jade and pearl suit white walls, light wood, sage green, plants and glass, and make a good companion for a vanity, a bookshelf or a breakfast nook. Hang it by itself or in a small cluster of mixed frames on a pale wall.
Beads, 10 x 10 x 1.75 in (25.4 x 25.4 x 4.4 cm). Framed in white, mounted against natural linen.
These panels are made of tiny beads built up in tight horizontal rows, with each letter formed by changing the bead color from row to row. The finished rectangle is slightly irregular at its edges, a soft, handmade shape rather than a rigid one, and it is mounted against natural linen inside a white box frame. The wording is short and personal, set in blocky, grid-like lettering that echoes pixels, stitches and early screen type.
Panda Landa (b. 1982) is a queer, non-binary visual artist and filmmaker raised in the Nevada desert and now based in Joshua Tree, California. Self-taught, they work through instinct and improvisation, making mixed-media textile pieces from second-hand fabrics that are dyed by hand, stitched and stretched over frames. Sustainability is central to the practice, and every cloth arrives with its own history.
Their ongoing series, including PORTAL, ALTAR, ECLIPSE, VESSEL and RITUAL, touch on queerness, identity, ancestral narrative, healing and transformation, and more recent beaded panels carry short, tender phrases in color. Landa made the 2022 film In the Middle of Everywhere and has offered a workshop on giving new life to clothes at the Joshua Tree Music Festival.
