Hot, pearly pink beads with an iridescent sheen make a ground for cream-white letters that spell TO BE QUEER IS TO BE FREE in four lines. The pink shifts between candy and orchid as the light moves, and the cream letters are soft and slightly raised. Panda Landa is a queer, non-binary artist whose series explore queerness and identity, and the sentence reads as a plain, joyful statement of belief rather than a slogan. The beaded panel floats against natural linen in a white box frame, ten inches square, and its color is the brightest note on a pale wall.
A joyful pink square for a bedroom, a dressing room, a studio, a hallway or a gallery wall. The hot pink and cream suit white walls, black frames, natural wood and sage green, and add a clear color note to a neutral room. Hang it at eye level in an entry or over a desk, or pair it with a quiet piece beside it.
Beads, 10 x 10 x 1.75 in (25.4 x 25.4 x 4.4 cm). Framed in white, mounted against natural linen.
These panels are made of tiny beads built up in tight horizontal rows, with each letter formed by changing the bead color from row to row. The finished rectangle is slightly irregular at its edges, a soft, handmade shape rather than a rigid one, and it is mounted against natural linen inside a white box frame. The wording is short and personal, set in blocky, grid-like lettering that echoes pixels, stitches and early screen type.
Panda Landa (b. 1982) is a queer, non-binary visual artist and filmmaker raised in the Nevada desert and now based in Joshua Tree, California. Self-taught, they work through instinct and improvisation, making mixed-media textile pieces from second-hand fabrics that are dyed by hand, stitched and stretched over frames. Sustainability is central to the practice, and every cloth arrives with its own history.
Their ongoing series, including PORTAL, ALTAR, ECLIPSE, VESSEL and RITUAL, touch on queerness, identity, ancestral narrative, healing and transformation, and more recent beaded panels carry short, tender phrases in color. Landa made the 2022 film In the Middle of Everywhere and has offered a workshop on giving new life to clothes at the Joshua Tree Music Festival.
