Cream capitals set in five stacked lines read I THINK WE KNEW IT WOULD BE DIFFERENT NOW against bubblegum-pink beads with a glossy, iridescent shimmer and a faint blue-violet flicker in the rows. The letters are spaced evenly, each built from large pale beads, and the panel is a soft rectangle with a slightly deckled edge. The quiet, retrospective sentence sounds like a thought at the end of a long day. Panda Landa works through instinct and improvisation, and the text follows no tidy rule, filling the panel to its edges. A white box frame and natural linen surround the beads, and the piece measures fifteen by twelve inches.
A mid-size, bright piece for a bedroom, a living room, a studio or a hallway. The bubblegum pink and cream suit white walls, gray linen, pale wood and brass, and bring a sweet, confident color note over a sofa, a desk or a console. At fifteen inches wide it is large enough to hold a wall by itself and still sits well in a gallery group.
Beads, 15 x 12 x 1.75 in (38.1 x 30.5 x 4.4 cm). Framed in white, mounted against natural linen.
These panels are made of tiny beads built up in tight horizontal rows, with each letter formed by changing the bead color from row to row. The finished rectangle is slightly irregular at its edges, a soft, handmade shape rather than a rigid one, and it is mounted against natural linen inside a white box frame. The wording is short and personal, set in blocky, grid-like lettering that echoes pixels, stitches and early screen type.
Panda Landa (b. 1982) is a queer, non-binary visual artist and filmmaker raised in the Nevada desert and now based in Joshua Tree, California. Self-taught, they work through instinct and improvisation, making mixed-media textile pieces from second-hand fabrics that are dyed by hand, stitched and stretched over frames. Sustainability is central to the practice, and every cloth arrives with its own history.
Their ongoing series, including PORTAL, ALTAR, ECLIPSE, VESSEL and RITUAL, touch on queerness, identity, ancestral narrative, healing and transformation, and more recent beaded panels carry short, tender phrases in color. Landa made the 2022 film In the Middle of Everywhere and has offered a workshop on giving new life to clothes at the Joshua Tree Music Festival.
