In this contemporary beadwork text piece by California desert artist Panda Landa, pale white lowercase letters read this surely is a dream in two lines across lavender beads, the grid of the beadwork clear in the detail photograph, each bead a tiny square-set unit. The lettering is small and rounded, in a childlike hand, and the lavender is hazy and glittering. A tiny pin is visible at the top edge of the panel where it meets the linen. Panda Landa has a background in filmmaking, including the 2022 film In the Middle of Everywhere, and the phrase has the soft quality of a line of subtitle in a half-remembered scene. The panel sits in a white box frame, fifteen by twelve inches.
A dreamy lavender piece for a bedroom, a dressing room, a nursery or a reading nook. The lavender and white suit white walls, gray linen, pale wood and silver or brass accents, and the mid-size format works above a bed, a dresser, a desk or a sofa. It brings a gentle color to a pale room and looks well beside a window.
Beads, 15 x 12 x 1.75 in (38.1 x 30.5 x 4.4 cm). Framed in white, mounted against natural linen.
These panels are made of tiny beads built up in tight horizontal rows, with each letter formed by changing the bead color from row to row. The finished rectangle is slightly irregular at its edges, a soft, handmade shape rather than a rigid one, and it is mounted against natural linen inside a white box frame. The wording is short and personal, set in blocky, grid-like lettering that echoes pixels, stitches and early screen type.
Panda Landa (b. 1982) is a queer, non-binary visual artist and filmmaker raised in the Nevada desert and now based in Joshua Tree, California. Self-taught, they work through instinct and improvisation, making mixed-media textile pieces from second-hand fabrics that are dyed by hand, stitched and stretched over frames. Sustainability is central to the practice, and every cloth arrives with its own history.
Their ongoing series, including PORTAL, ALTAR, ECLIPSE, VESSEL and RITUAL, touch on queerness, identity, ancestral narrative, healing and transformation, and more recent beaded panels carry short, tender phrases in color. Landa made the 2022 film In the Middle of Everywhere and has offered a workshop on giving new life to clothes at the Joshua Tree Music Festival.
