These colorful cubes act as optical prisms. As you move around them or change the lighting of the room, the internal planes reflect, refract, and interact to create completely different color combinations and shifting shadows.
About the Artwork
The Movement: Vasa Mihich is a central figure in the Los Angeles Light and Space movement (alongside artists like Larry Bell and Peter Alexander) and a master of Color Field concepts.
The Concept: He spent decades teaching color theory as a senior professor at UCLA. His sculptures translate these theories into physical forms, using clear plastic as a structural vehicle to suspend inner planes of transparent, hard-edged color.
The Illusion: The cubes act as optical prisms. As you move around them or change the lighting of the room, the internal planes reflect, refract, and interact to create completely different color combinations and shifting shadows.
Production: Typically sold in modular sets (such as sets of 3, 6, or 10 cubes), one cube in each set is traditionally incised with his hand signature and the production date.Similar authentic sets and individual cubes can be found on high-end art platforms like fine art auction houses. These objects are vintage Vasa Mihich laminated cast acrylic op-art cube sculptures.
Artist & Medium: Created by renowned modernist artist Vasa (Velizar Mihich) using precision-laminated cast acrylic.
Visual Properties: Designed to interact with ambient light, shifting and refracting vibrant internal color planes as the viewing angle changes.
About the Artist
Velizar 'Vasa' Mihich (born 1933, Yugoslavia) is a Serbian-American sculptor celebrated for his vibrant geometric acrylic sculptures and innovative exploration of color, light, and transparency.
After immigrating to Los Angeles in 1960, Vasa became influenced by the Hard Edge and Light and Space movements. By 1967, he had established acrylic as his primary medium, creating distinctive sculptures that manipulate light and color through layered geometric forms.
Vasa exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1967 and taught color theory at UCLA, where he is now professor emeritus.
His work is represented in major museum collections, including SFMOMA, the Hammer Museum, and the Hirshhorn Museum. His private commissions include works for Kofi Annan, Queen Silvia of Sweden, Google, and Shaquille O'Neal.
Artistic significance: Vasa is an established figure in Southern California's postwar art movement, particularly recognized for transforming industrial acrylic into sophisticated explorations of color, light, and spatial perception.
