A handsome late 18th-century American Chippendale slant-front desk, crafted in cherry and displaying the distinctive proportions and understated elegance associated with New England cabinetmaking. Dating to approximately 1770–1790, the desk features a traditional slant-front writing surface above four graduated drawers, all resting on beautifully shaped ogee bracket feet. The bold, scrolling profiles of the feet are particularly appealing and suggest the influence of Connecticut River Valley furniture traditions, although a more specific regional attribution remains tentative. With its warm cherry color, generous storage, and classic architectural form, this is a wonderful example of early American furniture that remains equally at home in traditional and contemporary interiors.
The desk is constructed primarily of cherry, with a rich reddish-brown finish that highlights the natural grain and character of the wood. The slant front features a molded recessed panel and decorative brass escutcheon, while the four graduated drawers are fitted with Chippendale-style brass bail pulls and matching keyhole escutcheons. The brass hardware is not original to the desk but complements its period design and overall appearance. Narrow vertical slides flank the upper drawer and are designed to support the writing surface when opened. Particularly noteworthy are the ogee bracket feet, with their graceful outward curves, pronounced scrollwork, and substantial stance. These distinctive details give the desk a strong architectural presence while retaining the restrained elegance characteristic of American Chippendale craftsmanship.
The desk is in nice antique condition, showing age-appropriate surface wear, scattered marks, and variations in color and finish consistent with its considerable age and normal use. The replacement brass hardware is noted for accuracy, and the cherry has developed an attractive warmth and character over time. The desk offers practical drawer storage and a writing surface suitable for everyday use, making it a beautiful and functional addition to a study, living room, bedroom, or entryway. A wonderful opportunity to bring a genuine piece of early American craftsmanship into the home. 42h x 42w x 20d knee height 31
