A tall wooden coat stand, 19th century, painted blue.
The shaft is fluted and stands on a cross base. Iron hooks are fixed to the shaft on small plates, set in pairs down the sides.
At the top, a carved bracket projects to one side. It is pierced in a lattice, centred on a rosette, and finished with turned drops. The capital above the bracket is carved with a row of small crosses.
A piece of this height was made for a hall or a passage, where coats and hats could hang clear of the floor.
The blue paint is the finish it carries now, worn back in places to the wood.
