An original oil painting by Ramon Kelley titled "The Character." A bearded man in a white T-shirt leans on his folded arms and looks off to the right. Kelley models the face and hands with warm, careful color and handles the shirt and background in loose, quick strokes of white, rust, umber and olive.
Signed "Ramon Kelley" with © and NAWA at lower right. The backing paper is inscribed in marker "West light," "the Character" and "oil" with the size, 12 1/4 x 9 3/4, and signed again by Kelley with NAWA and ©.
Gallery material from 1992 is attached to the back: a Turner Art Gallery envelope postmarked Denver, September 2, 1992, the gallery's card inviting collectors to a reception and preview of new paintings by Ramon Kelley on September 17, 1992, and a Denver Post clipping by Joanne Ditmer on a show of Kelley's work with his sons Adam and Benjamin. Turner Art Gallery was established in Denver in 1929.
Ramon Kelley was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1939 and has worked in Colorado for most of his career. He is largely self-taught and names Fechin, Sargent and Boldini as influences. He is a member of the National Academy of Western Art, which is the NAWA in his signature. The Pastel Society of America named him a Master Pastelist and elected him to its Hall of Fame. His work is in the collections of the New Mexico Museum of Fine Arts and the U.S. Military Academy Museum at West Point.
Presented in a carved gilt wood frame with a wide linen liner and a gold inner fillet, wired and ready to hang.
Painting: 9 3/4 x 12 1/4 inches, as inscribed on the back. Framed: 16 3/4 x 20 inches.
