This is an exceptional, investment-grade matching pair of vintage Mexican Majolica studio art pottery table lamps masterfully thrown and hand-painted by the renowned ceramicist and architect, Javier de Jesús Hernández Martínez ("Capelo") in Guanajuato, Mexico. Highly celebrated for resurrecting traditional 16th-century, tin-glazed Majolica techniques using regional terracotta clay, Capelo’s studio pieces are actively collected globally and preserved in institutions such as the Franz Mayer Museum in Mexico City.
While sharing identical elegant baluster silhouettes and premium custom brass hardware scales, the bases present a highly desirable "sister pair" featuring complementary, contrasting designs:
• Lamp 1 features a deep cobalt blue background with a stippled texture, adorned with bright golden-yellow sunflowers/poppies and soft green leaves. The base ring is hand-marked in block script: 'Gto. Mexico. CAPELO', indicating highly skilled studio apprentice execution under master direction.
• Lamp 2 features a warm ochre/yellow background with heavy traditional floral bandings, swirling green garlands, and dark abstracted berry motifs. The underside features a fluid, hand-painted cursive signature: 'Javier Capelo', denoting personal master sign-off.
Technical authentication hallmarks include beautifully exposed reddish-orange terracotta foot rims (intentionally wiped clean of glaze to prevent kiln fusing), microscopic glaze pinholes characteristic of authentic hand-dipped Majolica glass finishes, and precise integrated semi-circular cord notches cleanly cut directly out of the bottom rims for flush wire exits. Both lamps have been fully tested and are in perfect working order, complete with original removable metal shade harps and loop finial hardware. Both lamps are structurally sound, fully functional, light up perfectly, and display beautifully. As is characteristic of handmade Capelo pottery, there are natural glaze skips, fine surface pitting, and minor kiln imperfections from the original artisan firing process. One lamp body features a couple of tiny, glaze-level firing fissures or hairline surface lines which do not compromise the integrity of the thick terracotta walls. The brass caps show very minor vintage patina blemishes and superficial marks around the edges. The gold electrical cords and sockets are vintage but remain safe, tested, and fully working. Includes detachable shade harps.
