A sculptural French studio pottery vase distinguished by its broad, flattened, spinning-top silhouette and softly polished, stone-like surface. The generously rounded body tapers to a compact foot, while gently sloping shoulders rise to a short, subtly flared neck. Its restrained, architectural form draws attention to the remarkable interplay of shape, texture, and atmospheric coloration.
The smooth, seemingly unglazed surface displays the distinctive effects associated with pit firing and other smoke-firing techniques. Drifting charcoal-gray clouds, silvery ivory tones, and warm flashes of salmon, ochre, rust, and terracotta move organically across the vessel. Rather than appearing conventionally glazed, the coloration seems to emerge from the clay itself, suggesting the interaction of heat, smoke, and mineral-rich materials during firing. The softly polished finish has an almost geological quality, recalling the surface of weathered stone. The precise firing technique remains unconfirmed.
The vessel's expressive surface and understated silhouette recall the French studio pottery tradition associated with La Borne, a historic ceramics center celebrated for experimental stoneware, sculptural forms, and atmospheric firing techniques. Unsigned and identified stylistically.
Acquired in Paris.
