This Chinese export porcelain tea bowl, dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, features an eagle motif at its center, made for the American market during the Federal period. The eagle, with outstretched wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch, draws on the Great Seal of the United States.
Hand-painted in overglaze enamels, the eagle is framed by a decorative border with gilding, floral garlands and other neoclassical elements, reflecting American tastes. Pieces like this were part of specially commissioned services, ordered by merchants, diplomats and wealthy families eager to display their national pride through fine Chinese porcelain.
2" tall, 4.25" diameter.
