A charming antique Jenny Lind bed featuring beautifully detailed bobbin-turned posts, a graceful arched crest, and a distinctive scalloped spindle headboard. The richly figured wood, intricate turnings, and warm, timeworn patina give this piece wonderful character.
A little history: The Jenny Lind bed takes its name from Johanna Maria Lind (1820–1887), the celebrated Swedish opera singer known as the "Swedish Nightingale." In 1850, legendary showman P. T. Barnum brought her to America for a sensational concert tour. Her popularity was extraordinary, inspiring a nationwide craze known as "Lindomania." Everything from furniture to household goods was named in her honor.
According to furniture tradition, Lind admired a spool-turned bed during her American visit, and the style became popularly associated with her name. These distinctive turned-wood beds became enduring favorites in American homes.
This example features an especially decorative headboard with repeating scalloped openings, turned spindle details, and a coordinating solid-panel footboard. The bed retains its aged finish, with the beautiful imperfections and character of an antique.
