pair of original y-chairs (ch24 wishbone chair) in solid oak, designed in 1949 by hans j. Wegner and manufactured in denmark by carl hansen & søn in the 1970s. The y-chair was wegner's first design for carl hansen & søn, has been in continuous production since 1950, and is now considered one of the most iconic chairs in danish design. Wegner was inspired by portraits of danish merchants seated on chinese ming chairs—a motif he reinterpreted in a minimalist, scandinavian style. The chair owes its name to the characteristic y-shaped backrest, which supports the steam-bent, semi-circular back and armrests and lends the design its lightness. The manufacturing process involves over 100 steps, most of them done by hand; the seat weave alone requires approximately 120 meters of danish paper cord, hand-woven. The chairs have been carefully cleaned, re-oiled, and sealed; the solid oak displays a beautiful, naturally grown patina. The seats have been re-woven with danish paper cord. A previous owner had shortened the legs – we restored them to their original length with walnut leg caps in a contrasting color. This unique detail adds an extra touch of elegance and makes this famous design even more special. Both chairs bear the original carl hansen & søn manufacturer's sticker beneath the seat.
condition: very good vintage condition – cleaned, re-oiled, and sealed, with new danish paper cord seat weave and extended legs with walnut feet. An icon of danish design with a distinctive touch for sophisticated dining areas. This piece has an attribution mark,
