Considered one of the most recognizable designs of mid-century American modernism, the Marshmallow radically breaks with the traditional sofa concept through a structure formed by 18 independent circular cushions arranged on an exposed metal frame.

This particular example retains its striking original black and white upholstery, creating a monochromatic composition with powerful graphic impact. The discs are covered in synthetic material, likely vinyl and possibly Naugahyde, while the frame is made of lacquered and patinated steel.

The design arose from experimentation with a system for producing independent foam cushions. Although the initially proposed procedure proved impractical, the arrangement of the discs on a metal frame was so innovative that Herman Miller decided to incorporate the model into its production in 1956.

The repetition of circular shapes, the exposed frame, and the almost floating appearance of the whole anticipate certain elements of Pop Art and Space Age design, while remaining within the language of American modernism.

Although for decades the model was marketed primarily under the name George Nelson, important institutions now recognize Irving Harper's essential role in its design.

It is in good overall condition, with minor signs of use consistent with its age. The original upholstery shows slight wear, and the frame retains light surface marks.
