Pair of Italian cabinets, Renaissance, circa 1620.
Each cabinet is conceived as a small architectural front: a moulded cornice with dentil and carved leaf, fluted pilasters with parcel-gilt channels, and gilt swags on the capitals. Two panelled doors sit between the pilasters. The cases stand on stepped plinths with parcel-gilt dentil.
The two cabinets match in design but differ slightly in dimensions. They were used as working furniture over a long period and have later additions and restorations.
Wood with parcel-gilt.
Larger cabinet: height 180 cm (70.9 in), width 123 cm (48.4 in), depth 40 cm (15.7 in).
