A beautiful and exquisitely crafted Biedermeier cylinder secretary desk from southern Germany, dating from around 1825–1830. The piece is veneered with walnut on a softwood base and is distinguished by its carefully selected and meticulously finished wood grain.
Particularly noteworthy is the six-fold mirrored veneer pattern on the front, which is crafted from a single, continuous veneer from top to bottom. The evenly spaced grain gives the secretary desk a pleasing, serene appearance and underscores its high level of craftsmanship.
The secretary desk features three large drawers, providing ample storage space. The top drawer is located above the semicircular cylinder lock, with two more drawers below.
A pull-out writing surface operates the mechanism of the semicircular cylinder lock. When pulled out, the lock opens, revealing the finely crafted interior.
Inside are four smaller drawers, also veneered with beautifully grained walnut. In the center is an open compartment with a small mirror and a decorative chessboard. The writing surface is made of solid wood and offers ample space for writing or working.
This cylinder secretary combines the clean lines of the Biedermeier style with thoughtful functionality. Its warm wood tone and simple design allow it to be integrated into both classic and modern living spaces.
A comparable piece of furniture is illustrated on page 219 of the book "Biedermeier Furniture – Germany and the Danube Monarchy" by Rainer Haaff.
Condition
The secretary has been professionally restored and is ready for immediate use.
The wood surfaces have been refinished with shellac, which beautifully highlights the walnut grain.
All functions have been tested and are working perfectly. The cylinder mechanism, the pull-out writing surface, and the drawers all function without any issues.
