He's a Shiwan ware 'mudman' from the kilns at Shiwan in Guangdong, China — the partly glazed, earth-toned figures made there for export through much of the 20th century. The fine striations down his back are the modeled straw of the cape, and his face, beard, and hands are left unglazed in the Shiwan manner. At 10 inches he's at the large end for these figures.

The fisherman-recluse is a classic figure in Chinese art — the man who walked away from court and politics to live quietly by the water.

Unmarked on the base, as many of these are. 10 inches high by about 3.5 inches wide. Excellent condition — please review all photos, which show the exact figure you will receive. See less
