French post-impressionist oil painting – the corniche d’or and the red rocks of the estérel – signed rabier – early 20th century
a beautiful and generously sized french post-impressionist oil painting depicting the spectacular red rock coastline of the estérel massif on the french riviera.
this panoramic composition captures the dramatic mediterranean landscape, with richly textured red and ochre cliffs, lush vegetation, turquoise waters and distant mountains fading into the horizon.
the painting is distinguished by its lively, expressive brushwork, vibrant colours and striking sense of depth.
a remarkable historical detail
in the lower-left foreground, a coastal road with an unpaved, stone-covered surface and a masonry retaining wall can be clearly distinguished.
this feature strongly evokes the historic corniche d’or, the celebrated coastal road inaugurated in 1903 between saint-raphaël and cannes, when sections of the route still retained their original unpaved appearance.
artist and attribution
the painting is signed “rabier” in red in the lower-left corner.
a possible attribution is to the french painter gabriel rabier (1884–1955), who is documented as having stayed in fréjus during his convalescence following injuries sustained during the first world war.
